An analysis of the roles of rural industry in Van Truong commune, Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province

Title: An analysis of the roles of rural industry in Van Truong commune, Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province
Authors: Tran, Anh Tuan
Abstract: The Red River Delta (hereafter as RRD) is one of the two biggest deltas in Vietnam
with the population is 19,625 million persons in 2009. It is also the most populous area with the
population density of 932 person/km2 in 2009 (General Statistics Office, 2010). Tien Hai District
of Thai Binh Province locates in the eastern part of the RRD, lies in the coastal zone - a sensitive
area and affected by the interaction between the mainland and the South China Sea (in Vietnamese
as Biển Đông - East Sea). The study area of this research is Van Truong Commune locates in the
“old-land” area. Analysis of the roles of rural industry will show the characteristics of one of the
fundamental features of the rural development process particularly in Tien Hai District as well as
in the RRD.
Non-farm work is a useful solution to gradually bridge the income gap between urban and
rural areas, in which rural industry has been paid attention to develop (UNIDO, 2000).
Nevertheless, in a long time, the role of rural industry has been neglected because the mode of
production was followed the state-owned enterprises and cooperatives. The objective of the paper
is to analyze the realistic situation of rural industry in the RRD by tracing the characteristics of
rural industry in Van Truong Commune, Tien Hai District, Thai Binh Province.

Structural measures to restore Cua Tung beaches, Quang Tri province

Title: Structural measures to restore Cua Tung beaches, Quang Tri province
Authors: Nguyen, Tho Sao; et al.
Abstract: This paper presents the calculations using LITPACK models, aiming to select the
restoration solution for Cua Tung beach, severely eroded in recent years. The results are just the
preliminary, but they are useful to direct the optimal measures to bring the beach back to its
original state serving the social and economic development in Quang Tri province.

Numerical simulation of sediment transport and morphology

Title: Numerical simulation of sediment transport and morphology
Authors: Nguyen, Minh Huan; et al.
Abstract: Morphology change at tidal influent estuary is controlled by the net sediment transport
rate of river and tidal transport, and variations in features (bathymetry, structures, etc.) where
scour and shoaling take place. To examine river and tidal exchange sediment transport in a
systematic way, we investigated sediment transportation at the Bach Dang estuary with a coupled
tide, wave and sediment transport-morphology change numerical modeling system. Five
simulations consisting of tide forcing, wave forcing (fair-weather and storm), and combined tide and wave forcing were conducted.

Study on wave setup with the storm surge in Hai Phong coastal and estuarine region

Title: Study on wave setup with the storm surge in Hai Phong coastal and estuarine region
Authors: Nguyen, Xuan Hien; et al.
Abstract: Wave setup is the increase of water level within the surf zone due to the transfer of
wave-related momentum to the water column during wave-breaking. Wave setup contributes to the
total water height in storm and become dangerous to coastal construction. This study presents
some results on wave setup with storm surge using numerical model and empirical model. It also
estimates the contribution of wave setup in total storm tide level at coastal and estuarine region of
Hai Phong. Results show that wave setup at coastal and estuarine region in Hai Phong contributes
about 25% to 40% of sea level surge in storm, 32% on average.
